Introduction to Construction Estimating

Course fees: $465 for members and $495 for non-members

Course Details: This course is a self-paced online learning coursethat creates a bases for more complex and trade specific estimating courses. This internet based course is designed to help estimators refresh their estimating skills and to learn the fundamental skills that are undeniablyneeded to decide successful construction related estimates. The course duration is 10 weeks and each student is expected to spend 3 to 5 hours each class.

  • Introduction:The first module will let you know the objective of the course. It’ll provide you an overview and a chance to play with the course tools and basic features.
  • Necessity of Estimation: This module focuses on the various different uses for construction estimates. You will get to know that how an estimate can be done using various methods and techniques.
  • Estimating Techniques:In this module, the candidate will learn certain techniques and skills that is common in all the fields. Here you’ll learn the skills and guidelines on how to use those estimates techniques.
  • Estimating Tools: You’ll learn about the basic tools including software, digitizers, guide books, references and other estimating tools.
  • Different Levels and Types of the Estimate: You can get to know as how the amount of information available to you and the time you are allowed to prepare the estimate affects the quality and accuracy of your work.
  • Preparing the Estimate and the Masterformat:This module deals with organizing your estimatesand its importance.Candidate will also learn about the Masterformat and common organizing methods.
  • The next module deals with Estimating Materials, quantity take-off procedures, waste factors, and pricing methods.
  • Labor Cost: This is the longest module in this course. For this module, you should have your calculator ready. In this module, we’ll learn about using and developing production rates and how to adjust your estimate for a wide variety of factors that affect production rates.
  • Estimating Equipment:This module will cover Quantity take off procedures, pricing, and estimating techniques along with equipment production rates.
  • Estimating Overhead and Profit Margins: How, when and why to add contingencies. Adjusting the estimate for risk, inflation, and geographic location will be covered.
  • Estimating Errors: Learn about common errors estimators make and how to avoid making them.
  • Determining and Using Unit Prices: How to use unit prices effectively. The crew method, what it is and how to use it. Using unit prices for conceptual estimating and for detailed estimating will be covered.
