Types and purposes of concrete mix

The construction video session is based on Concrete Mixes, several subjects such as types of mixtures, reason for utilizing mixtures. Basic sorts of the concrete mix go from nominal mix, design mix and standard mix.

There’re various sorts of grades for concrete mixtures such as M7.5, M5, M10, M20, M15, M30, M25, M35, M45, M40, M50, M55, M60 in accordance with IS 456-2000.

The concrete grades represent the ratio wherewith the concrete components, that is, fine aggregate (sand), cement and coarse aggregate is mixed together.

IS 456-2000 has assigned the concrete mixtures to several grades like M15, M10, M25, M20, M30, M35 as well as M40. Within the description, the letter M represents the mixture and the numeral to the set twenty eight day concrete cube strength of mixture in N/mm2. The mixtures of gradesM10, M15, M20 and M25 match approximately to the mix portions (1:3:6), (1:2:4), (1:1.5:3), and (1:1:2) correspondingly.

Nominal mix: The mixtures refer to set cement aggregate ratio that confirm adequate strength to the concrete.

M7.5, M5, M15, M10, M25 and M20 are described as nominal mixes. Due to variability in mix, the practicability and compressive strength of the grades could differ. The mix ratio is essential, once the concrete estimation is done.

Design mix: In the mixes, the concrete feasibility is specified by the designer, although the concrete maker specifies the mix portions although the minimum cement volume can be set aside. That is highly practical way for selecting mix portions with specific materials in consideration including quite exclusive features.

Standard mix: In the sort of mix, the concrete is mixed together with the ratios of two parts sand, one part cement, and four parts coarse material.
