How to Calculate Cutting Length of Stirrups of Rectangular or Square or Circular Column

This construction tutorial provides brief information on how to calculate cutting length of circular Stirrups.

We have stirrups of rectangular and circular columns.

In rectangular column, length (A) = 300 mm and breadth (B) = 400 mm

Diameter = 8 mm and concrete cover = 40 mm

Also, distance from external center to external face = 44 mm

In circular column, total column diameter = 600 mm

External diameter = 8 mm

Clear span = 40 mm

Let’s calculate cutting length of rectangular column:

Column size = 300 mm x 400 mm

Column length (A) = 300 – 2 (concrete cover + bar diameter/2) = 300 - (2 x 44) = 212 mm

Column breadth (B) = 400 – (2 x 44) = 312 mm

Hook length = 10 x D = 10 x 8 = 80 x 2 = 160 mm [as there are two hooks]

Stirrup cutting length = (A x 2) + (B x 2) + Hook length [as sides are two]

Stirrup cutting length = (212 x 2) + (312 x 2) + 160 = 1208 mm

In m, 1208 / 1000 = 1.208 m

Let’s calculate cutting length of circular column:

Column diameter = 600 mm

Stirrup diameter from center to center = 600 – (2 x 40) – (4 +4) = 512 mm [as there are two sides]

Stirrup parameter = πd = 3.14 x 512 = 1608.704 mm

Hook length = 10 x D = 10 x 8 = 80 x 2 = 160 mm [as there are two hooks]

Stirrup cutting length = Stirrup parameter + Hook length = 1608.704 + 160 = 1768.704 mm

In m, 1768.704/1000 = 1.768 m
