How to Calculate Cutting length of Spiral or Helical Stirrups

In this construction video tutorial, Deepak Kumar, the renowned civil engineer will provide some useful guidance on how to calculate cutting length of spiral or helical stirrups.

Column diameter = 900 mm

Clear cover = 40 mm

Column size = 4 m

Spacing = 200 mm centre to centre

Height = 4000 mm

Stirrup diameter = 900 – 2 x clear cover

Stirrup diameter = 900 – 2 x 40

Stirrup diameter = 820 mm

Helical stirrup cutting length = n x square root (c2 + s2)

n = number of turn

c = circumference of stirrup

s = spacing

n = Height/Spacing = 4000/200 = 20 turn

c = πd = 3.14 x 820 mm = 2574.8 mm

Helical stirrup cutting length = 20 x square root ((2574.8)2 + (200)2)

Helical stirrup cutting length = 20 x 2581.85 = 51637 mm = 51.64 m
