Standard Sizes of Columns in Structures

Firstly, there isn’t/is no columns’ standard size. The column’s size relies on various aspects like the sort of column, that column’s architectural utility as well as load to be opposed. As per those aspects the column size has to be assumed or adopted as well as after that verification for protection/safety is required.

There’re various sorts of columns like RCC columns, timber columns, and so forth. These days, RCC columns are greatly being utilized in structures, as a result in the section/article, RCC columns’ sizes are going to be discussed.

The least column’s size mustn’t be lower than 9” x 9”; with regard to one storey structure having M15 [1:2:4] concrete.

In case 9” x 9” columns are to be utilized in 1 and a 1/2 storey building, in all circumstances utilize M20 (1:1.5:3) concrete. In case one utilizes M15 concrete with regard to 1 and a 1/2 storey structure, the column size must not be not more than/lower than 12” x 9”.

Space/distance amid columns:

Aim to keep the same distance amid the centres of 2 columns. In all circumstances, create a column layout/blueprint on a framework/grid. Also, the space/distance amid 2 columns with size 9”x 9” must not be greater than 4 m column’s centre to centre.

In case, bigger barrier free/barrier-free spaces/distances are needed in that case large size columns must be utilized. The columns’ size must be enhanced due to 2 aspects:

  • Rise in the distance amid 2 columns (that enhances the columns’ dimensions and the beam’s depth).
  • Building’s height (rise in the count of floors is in direct proportion/directly proportional to the columns’ dimensions).

Columns’ alignment:

A rectangular grid shall be created in contemplation of placing/setting the columns. That assists in averting errors as well as placing/setting in columns could be carried out properly. Also, the columns can conveniently be placed/arranged/set in 2 distinct manners:

  • In the direct line by means of a grid.
  • In a circular manner with regard to circular buildings.

Also, columns’ zigzag arrangement is an entirely incorrect approach of determining in structural design. Furthermore, it must be considered that at the time columns are raised/erected, beams are set/laid joining/connecting the columns. Moreover, the zigzag column arrangement/placement leads to 3 main problems:

  • Uneven load transfer.
  • Issues in wall construction.
  • Issues in setting/laying beams.
